Once upon a time, there was a very cranky, curmudg

Once upon a time, there was a very cranky, curmudgeonly girl who vowed the only boys she was going to deal with were the ones in her romance novels. They were loyal and handsome and romantic and—most importantly—easily slammed shut if they pissed her off. She refused to venture out into the world looking for trouble and adamantly swore that if love was in the cards, it would have to come and find her.

She proclaimed it loud and proud and dared anyone to challenge her, but in her heart, down deep under all the sarcasm and Dr Pepper and self-depreciation, she sat looking out at the big wall map in her lonely classroom (at 6PM on a Friday because this cranky hermit is also a glutton for punishment) and whispered, “Am I going to be alone in this world forever? I’ll be fine if it happens, but I need to start preparing to get more dogs.”

Then God and the universe and karma (and possibly their fellow teachers) conspired to answer the challenge to push the girl from where she was stubbornly rooted with a succinct, “Hold my beer.”

So, in love walked to the room where she sat. More precisely, in he walked. Well actually, in he limped in his walking boot from breaking his ankle on a rare Texas snow day by trying to be the cool teacher. In all his tall, bearded glory, he came bearing gifts of DP and plants and laughter—the girl’s love languages.

And then he walked in again and again because, remember, this girl was very hard-headed (it’s not her fault, it’s genetic) and pretty clueless (the tenth visit probably should have tipped her off) and determined to let someone break down the walls of her heavily-guarded heart.

But after much perseverance (on his part) and list-making (on her part), so it began.

Then stalled. Then eased forward. The stopped. Then re-started again, just like the girl trying to learn to drive a stick shift for the first time because, as previously alluded to, the girl had (has? not important) more issues than People magazine.
