I started back to regular yoga last week after an extended and sporadic break to get a jumpstart on one of mine and I'm already feeling it. In a sea of things that I cannot control, putting in a little mat time to start my day is something that I can, so that's what I'm starting with.

This is how Christmas morning is supposed to look.

The thought flies through my head before anything else can register and my eyes sweep across the figure lying next to me, her head resting on my bicep. Her long, black lashes fan out across high cheekbones. Full lips are bare except for the stain of deep red lipstick around their edges. The eye makeup she wore last night is smudged across her eyelids. Chocolate locks are curled in every direction across her pillow in complete disarray from where my greedy hands plowed through them.

She looks less than perfectly put together for the first time since I’ve met her, yet I still can’t pull my eyes away. She’s even more beautiful mussed.
‍
I press my fingers to my temples and press, trying to alleviate the throb there. I’m a little fuzzy on how exactly I ended up in bed with the ice queen herself, but, at the moment, while she’s almost completely silent and breathing deeply into the pillow, I don’t regret it one bit. It beats the hell out of waking up alone in the cold house I bought to renovate.

A porcelain shoulder peeks out above the white sheets with a faint bite mark on her pale skin. My bite mark.
‍
And the fuzziness sharpens into technicolor focus of last night.

What are you doing with the last month of this yea

What are you doing with the last month of this year?

That’s what my mind was rolling over on my evening walk (that now starts at 4:30PM 🤦🏻‍♀️). My little, list-making-loving heart get so happy when the calendar rolls over to the first day of the new month because it sees all the possibilities of things I could do or get done in that time.

Especially this month—the last month to a crazy, unexpected year that comes with both taking stock and setting goals. And mixed in with all my list making, I’m making a note to relax a little as well (yes, I have to write down relax because I’m sorta crazy) because this year has been hard and we could all use a big, non-socially distant hug—poor Hank has been hugged a lot this year—even if we have to wait a little longer.

So, what does your last month of 2020 hold? Goals? Chilling? Surviving? Stuffing those last few pandemic pounds from Mom’s Christmas cookies? (<— that one might be me)

Sometimes when I sit down to write, the words chas

Sometimes when I sit down to write, the words chase me faster than my fingers will fly. Cooperative characters, decisive in their actions, clear in their motivations, who talk amongst themselves and I act as a scribe, noting their action and dialogue and emotions as it unfolds before me.

The other 98% of the time, these assholes ignore my outline and introduce their own trauma then look at me like I’m just supposed to figure it out, leaving me with a trail of candy that I dole out to my Pavlovian brain to keep my ever-expanding butt in this chair, one piece for every hard-fought hundred words. Okay, fifty. Fine, fine — five. Geez. Go easy. It’s Friday! (Right? I don’t really know anymore. Shrug.)

Anyone want to take a guess at what kind of writing session I’m having today? 🤦‍♀️

What do you do to motivate yourself? Food is a pretty constant bribe that my inner psyche appreciates. Besides, at least it’s shaped like fruit. #writerslife
